Every five years 194 parties to the Paris Agreement are legally obligated to submit updated NDCs. These plans or not just formalities: NDCs are a vital tool for steering climate action and building a safer future for humanity.
CCAG challenges the notion that economic growth and climate action are in conflict. Renewable energy is very cost competitive with fossil fuel sources, and generally offers enhanced energy security. Ambitious climate policies are both essential and economically advantageous. A well-designed NDC can deliver cleaner air, healthier communities, more resilient economies, and secure jobs.
It is critical for NDCs to be: equitable, ensuring no one is left behind; transparent, clearly showing how targets will be met; financially viable, backed by real investments and international finance; practicable, grounded in proven solutions and technologies. CCAG is working globally to promote these principles – ensuring NDCs are not only ambitious, but implementable.
At COP29, CCAG convened a diverse range of stakeholders to explore how to galvanise action around NDCs. Guided by CCAG’s newly released Guiding Principles for High Ambition NDCs, the session highlighted concrete strategies to amplify ambition to promote high-ambition climate commitments, empowering participants to advocate for bold targets and equipping them with clear evidence to support.
CCAG plays a pivotal role within a wider coalition focussed on raising global NDC ambition. By providing scientific insight, CCAG provides the evidence needed to demonstrate the critical importance of NDCs, as well as the insights and solutions for a clear pathway forwards.
