Industry argues that enforcing the EU Methane Regulation will shrink Europe's gas supply and push prices up. This briefing sets out why the evidence says otherwise. The rule puts wasted gas back on the market, and the cost of complying is small.
- The IEA puts the gas that could be captured and sold by stopping leaks and ending routine flaring at around 200 billion cubic metres a year, about double what Qatar exports.
- Independent modelling puts the cost of meeting the standard at about €0.07 per MMBtu, around 0.3% of what gas costs today.
- Prices are high at the moment because of the loss of Gulf supply and the pull of Asian buyers.
- Gas already reported to the standard the EUMR requires totals more than three times what the EU imports.
